Lagrasse is an 11th century village with an amazing abbey built by Charlemagne, cobbled streets, a big church at its heart and the old 11th century "place de la Halle". The village was voted "one of the most beautiful villages in France" and is situated in the middle of the Cathare region. It is an active village with a potters market, and an organic and local produce market on Saturdays. There are a number of festivals including the music festival around the 20th of July, a book festival in August and parties in the surrounding villages every weekend . It has two epiceries (corner shops) and five really good restaurants, a lively bar/cafe serving good and simple food, a garage and petrol pump nearby, a football field and the village tennis court. The village school organizes a free kiddies' club in the afternoons to give you some free time to enjoy the activities of the area such as wine tasting or hiking with the local club. The river Obrien to swim in, or to go fishing in. Canyoning, kayaking and outdoor rock climbing are available nearby. And last but not least, over 350km of tracks to go mountain biking, horse riding or hiking. (Bikes available to rent, contact owner for details)
One of the most impressive things about the landscape in this area is the speed at which it changes. In a 30 minute drive from Lezignan to Termes, you go through plains of colorful vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see and dry red clay hills covered by pines or a multitude of small shrubs and flowers such as wild Thyme, Rosemary and Lavender. Lagrasse is in a bowl, surrounded by a mixture of pine wooded hills, "garrigue" and vineyards. Another 15minutes and you are driving up winding roads in the middle of oak tree forests and craggy cliffs past Cathar castles dating back to the 11th century. 350km of tracks and many rivers such as the Aude or the Orbieu among others, create a landscape full of magical walks with cool refreshing water on your way.
The climate is dry heat in summer averaging 28°/29° from end of June to mid September, with occasional summer storms. It can be windy at times so wind breakers can come in handy.
Autumn and spring are mild; however, don't forget to pack a t-shirt or two as very hot days are not rare during these seasons.
Winters are generally mild, grey skies, wind and rain are not unusual. However, you generally never have more than a few days of bad weather in a row, the sun is always around the corner. In January, you can eat out on a sunny terrace one day and be under snowflakes the next (though it never really settles). Winter time is a great time to go walking in the Pyrenees, Camurac, the nearest ski resort, is only 1hr30 drive away. (see photo)
There are many places of interest to fill your holidays with. Carcassonne castle is 35min away. You can go on the "circuit Cathare" and visit the 11th century fortresses towering over their rocky mountain tops. Not only do they plunge you into the country's past, but also offer you breathtaking views of the Corbières countryside for miles on end. The med and sandy beaches are a forty five minute drive away at Port la Nouvelle or Gruissan plage. Spain is an 1h30min drive away, or visit Barcelona only 3hr away. Aqualand in Cap D'Agde or Puerto Aventura in Spain are fun days out with or without kids! and for the more adventurous type there is Accrobranche ,an adventure park in the trees way above ground, near Carcassonne. The Aude region is also outdoor climbers delight, Vingrau, Tautavel, or La Clape are only some of the great spots. Cannoning is another great sport to practice here with the Gorges du Tarn not far or the Gorge de Galamus nearby.
Lagrasse and its area, off the beaten track, a preciously kept secret for you to discover!
